How to create directable lightning?

I need to create some directable lightning effects. Unfortunatly it has to be in 3d, so I cannot use afterEffects or other compositing solutions.

Any ideas?

Are you on Maya? if you are then you could check out some paint effects lighting examples in the Visor.

Btw, if you are the same haggi who maintains the renderwiki blog, then thank you for sharing all your knowledge, especially the Renderman stuff.

I’m on maya. The paintfx I tried is not useful in this case, but I’ll try again, maybe I could simply modify them a bit. And yes, I’m this haggi with the renderwiki. Good to know that someone appreciate my work, I hope I can continue to add a lot of interesting stuff.

haggi, there was a tech talk that Duncan had given last year which included some examples of “electric” fx using pfx. I’m not really sure if you’ll find them useful but you could give them a try. There was one particular example where Duncan had set up a completely controllable electric lighting/plasma type stuff.

How about just doing an amimated image sequence on planes. If the visor is not working I guess this is the other way I can think of when creating lightning.
