is it posible to create render layer for water

Hi,

I need a render layer for some mia water in my scene. I can achieve the pass I need by making all the geometry except the water only visible in refraction and reflections but these changes are global so all the other render layers become useless.

my current work flow is to have duplicate setups one for my water pass and one for the other layers, but this doesn't seem professional.

if there is a way I would really appreciate a point in the right direction.

thank you

Which software are you working on?

In Maya, when you change an attribute such as "Primary Visibility" for an object in a render layer, it automatically creates a "render layer override" of that attribute. If not you can right click the attribute in the attribute editor and select "Create Layer Override".

So I am puzzled by your comment about the changes being global. Maybe you are confusing "render layers" and "render passes", if you are using render passes you will need to create a new render layer (from the layers panel below the channel box) and there you can create these layer overrides.

I know this option exists in other software as well such as XSI, you just need to know where to find it...

Hi Hexygen, having read your reply and seeing that what I was trying to achieve should be possible I tried to recreate my issue in a new scene and it worked. :)

I must have had a temperamental scene file.

Thanks for taking the time to help, much appreciated.
