What's your question?

Quick easy keying software for digital stills?

I would like to pull keys from blue and green screen backgrounds as quickly and as easily as possible. Obviously the quality of lighting is paramount, and lots of problems can be avoided by getting it right on the day of the shoot.

Which applications or plugins would one recommend? Although I am wanting to pull keys from still images taken with a DSLR (and edited in Photoshop), this may also be a useful question for those working in film too.

Thanks,

For pulling keys in Photoshop use channels and color modes (lab mode will give you a decent chromatic keying environment, RGB mode for RGB and don't forget Calculations). The keyers in Shake are not THAT much better for stills (and I never had any success with Primatte anyway - just as I didn't with any patch-colorcube based keyer in general, including the 3D keyer in Flame).

But if you are asking, I'm a sucker for the Master Keyer in Flame :-) I think Toxik has it too - be quick to pick this one up before it disappears into the ether, since Autodesk is firmly set on destroying anything compositing-related in their arsenal except Flame.

Personally, even when working on stills, I use Shake... I know, it's really not meant for it, but I've not used that much Photoshop, and, as I use Shake every day, I find myself able to do stuff in there so much more flexible.

So, to answer your actual question, I use whatever mixture of keying nodes in Shake as I'd use on anything else... Keylight, Primatte, own-rolled...

Hi there,

I have used Keylight 1.2 in After Effects, even if it is just for stills, it does a pretty good job. You want to set up the screen color, even if you don't have a good evenly lit green screen it would work just fine. You can do a garbage matte right there using the source Crops settings, etc.

Good luck
