Screaming Machine for Fluid Dynamics in Maya, RealFlow ?

Hey guys,

I was thinking on upgrading my machine and I decided to run these specs by everyone to kind of get an idea of what’s a pretty descent system for FX TD.

I took a look at one of the systems from Dell.

Internal 19 in 1 USB Media Card Reader Integrated Intel chipset SATA 3.0Gb/s controller Precision Workstation T5500 Tower, Estar Processor: Intel Quad Core Xeon Processor X5687 (3.60GHz,12M L3,“ 6.4GT/s) 12 GB Memory (6x2GB), 1333MHz Dual Ranked RDIMMs 1 TB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ 16MB DataBurst Cache 2nd Drive 1 TB SATA 3Gb/s Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/ 16MB DataBurst Cache 16X DVD +/– RW Drive 2GB NVIDIA Quadro 4000, Dual Monitor, 2DP & 1DVI Genuine Windows 7 Professional

A system like this one can cost up to \$4,550 however, while testing it in Maya I couldn’t move around while working with a fluid container 200,200,200 perhaps upgrading to 24 Gig? however the Processing power did ok I guess, I could be rendering stuff in Maya while I could play quicktime movies, access the internet and open another instance of Maya and work on some ncloth.

I am just wondering if anyone is working with fluid dynamics with resolutions of more than 300 or so without chocking while moving around? could you share the system that you guys are using?

Thanks

Martin
