How would I convert an image built in microsoft expression design to Adobe Illustrator, photoshop or fireworks while keeping the paths?

Is there a way to smooth vector paths in any 2d gfx software? I have a ragged path in fireworks that I would like to be smoothed as how it could be done on 3d models in 3ds max.
