The only third-party production software (beyond FilemakerPro) I have seen in production was Shotgun. That was on a couple of small projects at a small/medium size studio and for production management I thought it was good... and had the potential to be great. Since that time it has grown beyond shot tracking and now has features like gantt charts for scheduling and integration with RV for running dailies. I even heard of a studio doing financial tracking with it.

Like all these things, it's just a tool and not a substitute for production experience and working practices. I.e. it won't tell you how to run a show.

As far as I know, Shotgun Software also offer a hosted solution which might be helpful (re setup/tech costs) for a small studio.

Yup – that’s how they generally do it – you can get an in-house solution if you want, for a price (I’m really not sure off the top of my head what that price is), or you can get licenses per user (I think they start from \$19 per user per month for up to 5 users) if you’re running off their hosted system. It does feel a little sluggish at times, but it’s certainly useable…

So far, the most efficient solution I've seen is Shotgun (http://www.shotgunsoftware.com/). It won't do asset management, but is great at all the rest. They seem to be working on a new project which will integrate asset tracking into production management.

Tactic (www.southpawtech.com/) also seems very interesting. It does asset and project management, but it requires a lot of in-house tuning and development to get working.

Both products are web-based, which is a plus.

I've had very mixed comments on Temerity's Pipeline (temerity.us/home.php). It seems to have scalability issues and requires a heavy investment for setup/training. To a certain extend, it will require you to adapt your way of working to it's "philosophy" instead of the other way around, which can be a problem and restrain flexibility.

There are other solutions out there (Alienbrain, etc.), but they are less VFX/post friendly

Thanks! I am particularly interested in the system for small companies. You saw the installation shootgun or other in such companies?

We, as a small company, have been trialing Shotgun recently.

On the whole, we like it. The scheduling and tracking parts of the tool are great, and if has a good API for integrating into an existing pipeline (or for getting it to talk to your internal tools)

Being a web-based app, it does have some speed issues - it's not as responsive as it possibly could be, but for the price, it's far better than anything you might be able to develop in-house.

It also has some very good integration with RV Player. I'm not sure if this is entirely released yet (the RV plugin side) - you can check out a video of the integration here.

You can check out Shotgun's support page here - there are release videos for most major features which are worth watching.

Project Overlord (http://www.give-soft.com) is another solution. It's a desktop application so it really handles asset management and versioning really well. It has many project tracking features which are all linked together and basically connect all your assets to different project elements. It's got gantt charts and some great collaboration tools.

It's very similar to alienbrain with added layers of production tracking tools. It will also work across the net for projects requiring remote users.

It's real simple to install and get up and running.

There is a 30 day demo. If you email the developers they will send you a link.

I can’t find any information on the website about tech specs… The screenshots look like it’s Windows-only, though…
